Breaking Up with MAC’s “Chilled on Ice”

About six months ago, on a trip to Vancouver, I bought MAC’s Pro Longwear Paint Pot in “Chilled on Ice.”  I’d describe it as a nude pink base with warm golden champagne shimmer. In the pot and in swatches, it is a thing of beauty.

At the MAC counter, I tested this out on the back of my hand and instantly fell in love. I remember thinking at the time that this paint pot would make a fantastic base for powder shimmers and metallics and that it would look stunning on its own for a warm, sparkly look. I had purchased several paint pots in the past and always found them to be smooth, creamy, blendable and long-wearing, so I just kind of assumed I would love “Chilled on Ice” as much as I love the others.

Hauliday Fun: MAC Cosmetics Marge’s Extra Ingredients Quad

I have a confession to make. This might seem odd for someone that obsesses about makeup as much as I do, but I have never owned a single item from any of the limited edition collections from MAC. I have many things from the permansimpsons referencesent line, but the limited edition collections have never captured my attention strongly enough to make me pull out my Visa card….that is, until The Simpsons collection came out this past fall. I am a certifiable Simpsons fanatic. I started watching it when I was a kid and never stopped. I reference the show on a near daily basis. I even wrote my Master’s thesis on The Simpsons.

Want to hear another bizarre confession? I didn’t buy anything from the collection when it came out!!! What is wrong with me?! My two great loves, makeup and The Simpsons, united in a once-in-a-lifetime, never-to-be-seen-again collection, and I passed it up. Why? The timing of this collection really wasn’t great for me. It launched late-August/early-September, and I had just been on a major shopping bender in Vancouver and needed to start saving for Christmas. So, I let the collection pass me by and deeply regretted it.

Luckily for me the universe has a way of sorting these situations out. My Dad, who does most of his Christmas shopping on eBay, surprised me with this:

A brand new, still-in-the-box eyeshadow quad from The Simpsons collection! I don’t have any swatch photos to post, because I’ve decided to keep this one pristine and add it to my Simpsons collection rather than my makeup collection. Even though the dark shade on the right (Vivacious Vacuum Cleaner Bag) looks divine, I can’t bear to mess up the surface and ruin the imprinted design. I love that they made Marge the focus of the collection since she’s usually overshadowed by the other characters.

Thanks Mom and Dad!

The Look I Fall for Every Year

I don’t usually let seasonal trends dictate how I wear my makeup. I follow my moods more than anything. Fall, however, is the exception. September/October is my favourite time of the year, and that definitely gets reflected in my beauty choices. There is one timeless fall trend that I go back to year after year. And I’m not exactly sure why that is. It’s as though whatever biological mechanism that tells the Canada goose to fly south also tells me to start reaching for products to create my quintessential fall look. The products change from year to year, but the look remains the same: a bronzy smoky eye and a plum/berry lip. I see this look popping up on beauty blogs and in style magazines every fall, so I know I’m not alone on this one.

Below is a sampling of the products that I’ve been using this fall…

To create the bronze smoky eye, I’ve been loving:
