neutrogena-oil-free-acne-stress-control-3-in-1-hydrating-acne-treatmentI decided to dedicate the second post in my Game Changers series to Neutrogena’s 3-in-1 Hydrating Acne Treatment from their Oil Free Acne Stress Control line.

The first thing I want to say about this product is that I’ve been using it daily for over TWO YEARS! That tells you something right there, because it’s rare for me to finish a skin care product let alone repurchase one. I have been through countless tubes of this stuff and am never without it. As I’ve mentioned before, I have oily, problem skin that is prone to breakouts and clogged pores. Anyone with this skin type knows how tough it is to find acne treatments that aren’t too harsh, irritating or just plain useless. I have never committed to a skin care product the way I’ve committed to this one.

I discovered this product in the Summer of 2012. I was still living in Ontario then and the humid climate there had wreaked havoc on my pores. I purchased this after reading reviews on Paula Begoun’s website, Beautypedia. This product scored highly thanks to its gentle formula that contains ingredients that soothe and repair the skin. More importantly, though, it contains 2% salicylic acid and has an overall pH of 3.4 Why does that matter? Think back to chemistry class and what you learned about acids and bases. A lot of the salicylic acid treatments on the market are garbage, because they’re formulated in such a way that the acid is neutralized, so the exfoliating reaction can’t happen. Effective, gentle salicylic acid treatments are a rare find. As far as I can tell from my research, this is the only affordable one that’s readily available in Canada.

I love this product because, for me, it serves three purposes. It helps with clogged pores, it hydrates, and, thanks to its smooth silicone base, it makes a great primer for makeup. I put this on in the morning after cleansing and it’s like a treatment, moisturizer and primer all in one. Oh and did I mention that it’s really affordable and readily available in most drug stores?

That is, until recently. You see, I have a secondary motive for writing this post. This product is truly awesome and its Game Changer status is well deserved. I felt compelled to write about it now, though, because I’ve noticed that it has disappeared from store shelves in my area. Rumour has it, this product has been discontinued. When I first discovered that this was missing from the shelf at Shopper’s Drug Mart, I nearly had a Charlton Heston in Planet of the ApesĀ style breakdown:

You maniacs! You discontinued it! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!

This product was discontinued in the US, but has been available in Canada until recently. I remain hopeful that Neutrogena Canada will keep this product around. It’s still listed on their website. Also, I noticed that below its place on the shelf at London Drugs, there was a sticker that said “Temporarily Out of Stock,” so maybe they were going to discontinue it and have changed their minds. A girl can hope.
