In Search of Budget Options…

Standard

Impending motherhood has me thinking about my budget. I’m no math wizard, but I’m pretty sure mypiggy_bank grocery bill is going to go up, and my income is going to go down while I’m on leave. That means making some changes to my spending habits….particularly in the beauty department.

This shouldn’t be too hard; when it comes to things that I use everyday and have to replace often, I try to choose budget friendly options whenever I can. For example, I routinely use drugstore foundation, concealer and mascara. In spite of my thriftiness, though, there are still a few spendy staples that I would like to replace with drugstore alternatives:

1) Urban Decay Primer Potion – This is a tough one, because I’ve used this product for years, and it’s been a real struggle to find something that can stand up to my oily lids as well as this does. I’ve dabbled with others here and there, but I always come back to this one. Today, I’m test driving a promising contender from NYX. I’ll let you know how that pans out.

2) Clinique Almost Powder Foundation – It also pains me to find a replacement for this one. This powder has it all. A smooth, silky texture that blends seamlessly into the skin without looking powdery. Excellent coverage! About as much as you could ever hope to get from a powder. I use this as a setting powder to lock liquid foundation in place and boost coverage. I also use it on its own as a foundation, and the coverage is good enough that it can also conceal minor blemishes in a pinch. The icing on the cake is that it offers mineral based, broad spectrum SPF 15 protection, so it gives your sun protection a boost as well. I’ve looked at some drugstore powders lately and just haven’t seen anything that really compares to this. The search continues…

3) Shiseido Facial Cotton – I tried these once and got hooked! They’re so soft, and they don’t fall apart and get cotton fibers in my eyes when I take off my mascara (that really hurts btw!). It’s really hard to go back to the budget brands once you’ve tried these. But you know what? You get 165/package, and they’re so big and plush that just one is enough. I use one side to remove eye makeup and the other side to take off most of my foundation. Maybe these are actually more economical…I only buy about two packs a year….maybe I don’t need to replace these…the justifications are adding up.

4) Marcelle 3-in-1 Micellar Solution – This is by far my favourite product for removing makeup. You may recall, it was the clear winner in my Battle of the Micellar Solutions post a while back. It’s extra gentle on eyes and skin, and yet it removes even long-wearing makeup with ease. I love it so much, but it’s about $18 a bottle, and I go through it pretty fast. It feels like an extravagance, and the price seems out of step with the other extra gentle products that Marcelle released around the same time. I know Marcelle has some other gentle makeup removers that are cheaper. Perhaps I will try one of those next time I run out.

Anyone know of any good budget-friendly dupes for these products? Mention them in the comments, please!
